Playing Poker Online In 2012

With 2012 fast approaching I thought that now would be a good time to write a post about playing poker online in 2012.  There have been many changes to the world of online poker in 2011. The industry is almost unrecognizable today compared to this same time a year ago.  There is still a lot of turmoil but things are starting to settle down. Playing poker online next year is going to be more difficult for people from the US but this may only be temporary. The US government has made deals with some online poker sites that would allow them to legally offer their services in this country once online poker is fully regulated. I am not aware of any particular Bill that would do this but other poker sites like Party Poker have also been very active in the USA.

This is very good news for Americans but I also have some good news from players from around the world. Full Tilt Poker is one of the companies that will be allowed to operate in the United States but that is just a side note to the deal they made with the DOJ recently. Millions of online poker players have been waiting to be paid the money owed to them by Full Tilt since around April of 2011. This money should be paid soon, hopefully by Christmas.

There have also been some popular innovations to online poker in 2011. I will cover a couple of the major developments that will have a big impact on the way we play online poker in 2012.

Time Tournaments - MTT’s Will Never Be The Same

Pokerstars recently launched a new tournament structure that is going to be a big hit in 2012. Time Tournaments have fixed time lengths that range from 15 minutes to a couple hours and they do not have a fixed prize pool structure. I will scale down a typical poker tournament to make it easier to understand. Let’s say you play in a $1 Time Tournament with 99 other players.  The time length is 15 minutes and each player gets 100 starting chips. This makes each chip in play worth one cent. If you are the chip leader with 1,500 chips after 15 minutes you would win $15. If you were the short stack with 8 chips you would win 8 cents. This new type of tournament is sure to be copied by other online poker sites in 2012.

Webcam Poker - An Old Idea Recently Perfected

Webcam poker surely isn’t something new or innovative but no online poker room has been able to pull it off successfully until recently. 888 Poker, a non-US room (for now) has been offering HD quality webcam poker tables for a little while now. Pokerstars Vs Party Poker

Even since Pokerstars was forced to block U.S. citizens from playing at their tables the gap between them and Party Poker has been decreasing. The Pokerstars Vs Party Poker debate has become a little more animated in light of the events that started earlier this year. The closure of three other major online poker sites has benefited Party Poker more than Pokerstars but in regards to overall traffic Pokerstars is still the clear winner. The quality of a poker room cannot and should not be determined simply by traffic. The overall experience at an Internet poker site is influenced by many factors. In this post I will compare Pokerstars to Party Poker based on the most important of these factors:

• Software
• Loyalty Program

I will score each room using a 1 out of 10 rating, with 10 being the highest. I do acknowledge that traffic is an important factor so here is a quick review of their respective traffic levels:

Poker Stars Vs Party Poker - The Software

Historically Party Poker’s software was inferior but they have recently upgraded their platform to include fresh graphics, new features and an overall more modern feel. The software at Pokerstars has been exception from virtually day one.  With Party Poker’s upgrades it is really hard to judge between these two poker rooms. Both are fast, functional and include many cool features. I think that the game variety is what really makes the software at Pokerstars slightly better. They offer around twice as many different card games and mixed poker games. Some don’t receive much traffic but having more options is always good.

Pokerstars Vs Party Poker - Loyalty Program

This is another feature that Pokerstars dominated in for many years but recent improvements at Party Poker has made things much closer. High stakes player and medium stakes players that play for 20+ hours per week will receive more value through the Pokerstars VIP program. Smaller stakes and recreational medium stakes players tend to receive more perks through the Party Poker VIP program. The average online poker player will tend to receive more cash through the Poker Stars loyalty program so they score slightly higher in this category.

Pokerstars Vs Party Poker - The Results

It looks like both rooms are equal when you do not factor in traffic. They are both highly trustworthy so the choice is yours. If you like to play games other than Hold’em, Stud and Omaha I would suggest Pokerstars since their software includes more unique card games than any other room. The online gambling industry has had a rough year so far in 2011. Online poker was hit the hardest but some online casinos and sportsbooks were also affected. Many gambling sites have either been forced to shut down, chose to close or were forced to ban American players. This post will outline the current situation online gamblers are in as the dust settles.

Internet casinos got off relatively easy compared to poker rooms. A handful of some really popular casinos did bite the bullet though. Americans lost all types of gambling games when one of the top casino networks stopped accepting them. Online casinos are not as vulnerable as poker rooms though. There are thousands of casinos and if they all lost their domains today they would just go back online with a different domain tomorrow. There are still some decent places to gamble at though.

Online Poker In 2011

The online poker sector was hit the hardest. The problems started when the U.S. Department of Justice seized the domains of many of the top online poker rooms. Only Pokerstars has been able to remain in business. Their competitor Full Tilt Poker was able to get their domain back but they lost their gambling license as a result of not paying their players. U.S. gamblers have had to find new poker rooms to play at. It is still too early to tell which poker sites will be on top after all is said and done.

Some online bookmakers were closed down as a result of the recent US government actions.
